Home » Endovenous Laser Ablation
Do you suffer from leg pain, swelling, or fatigue? Why put up with it when you don’t have to? With over 500 procedures a year, we are your Northern Beaches and North Shore experienced vein doctors.
Endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) is a less invasive treatment for venous insufficiency. EVLA has been shown to be effective for treating venous insufficiency in many patients, with recovery times typically being shorter and discomfort generally being tolerable. The procedure is able to be performed in the outpatient setting in our purpose-built clinic. EVLA is often performed in conjunction with ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy to achieve optimal results.
EVLA involves inserting a catheter into the diseased vein and delivering a source of heat via a laser fibre. The laser’s heat destroys the cells lining the vein wall and the vein is gradually reabsorbed by the body over several months.
The published success of EVLA treatment is 98%, with far fewer complications than surgery.
The procedure takes approximately 40-60 minutes.
Most treatments are followed by the application of compression stockings, which must be worn for at least 1-3 weeks depending on the treatment provided. Patients will be advised to go for a 30-minute walk immediately after the procedure.
*It is recommended you arrange transport to and from the procedure as the anaesthetic can make driving difficult.
2 weeks post-procedure, patients will be reviewed in clinic to assess the progress of their recovery. An ultrasound will be performed to exclude the very small risk of deep vein thrombosis.
Some patients may require follow-up treatment of residual varicosities by ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy. This is typically performed approximately 2-4 weeks post laser treatment for varicose veins.
This consultation is the perfect way for you to learn about what we can do to help you become free of the pain and discomfort of your varicose veins. From start to finish a consultation takes about 45 minutes and the valuable information you will receive will enable you to make important healthcare decisions about your varicose veins.
