Feeling embarrassed with what you wear? Low self-confidence during summertime? Constant leg pain? Why put up with it when you don’t have to? With over 500 procedures a year, we are your Northern Beaches and North Shore vein specialists.

Endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) is currently the gold standard minimally invasive treatment for venous insufficiency. Patients can expect high success rates, short recovery times and minimal discomfort. The procedure is able to be performed in the outpatient setting in our purpose-built clinic. EVLA is often performed in conjunction with ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy to achieve optimal results.

How does EVLA treatment work?

Endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) is currently the gold standard minimally invasive treatment for venous insufficiency. Patients can expect high success rates, short recovery times and minimal discomfort. The procedure is able to be performed in the outpatient setting in our purpose-built clinic. EVLA is often performed in conjunction with ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy to achieve optimal results.

EVLA involves inserting a catheter into the diseased vein and delivering a source of heat via a laser fibre. The laser’s heat destroys the cells lining the vein wall and the vein is gradually reabsorbed by the body over several months.

How is EVLA performed?

  1. The skin puncture site is numbed with local anaesthetic
  2. A small laser fibre is inserted into the vein under ultrasound guidance and positioned appropriately.
  3. The diseased vein is numbed with local anaesthetic, causing the vein to collapse.
  4. The laser is activated and withdrawn during which time heat energy is applied to the vein.
  5. Heat from the laser causes the vein to shut down.

How effective is the procedure?

The published success of EVLA treatment is 98%, with far fewer complications than surgery.

How long does the procedure take?

The procedure takes approximately 40-60 minutes.

Post-procedure care

Most treatments are followed by the application of compression stockings, which must be worn for at least 1-3 weeks depending on the treatment provided. Patients will be advised to go for a 30-minute walk immediately after the procedure.

*It is recommended you arrange transport to and from the procedure as the anaesthetic can make driving difficult.

Follow-up

2 weeks post-procedure, patients will be reviewed in clinic to assess the progress of their recovery. An ultrasound will be performed to exclude the very small risk of deep vein thrombosis.

Some patients may require follow-up treatment of residual varicosities by ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy. This is typically performed approximately 2-4 weeks post laser treatment for varicose veins.
