Is superficial thrombophlebitis serious?
Superficial thrombophlebitis is usually not a serious condition. Within a few weeks, the blood clot in the vein usually clears and the inflammation resolves. However, there is a small chance that a blood clot in the superficial vein will spread to deeper veins, resulting in deep venous thrombosis, a serious condition (DVT).
Risk factors
Risk factors increasing your chance of developing thrombophlebitis include:
- Varicose veins
- Smoking
- Obesity
- Contraceptive pill or hormone replacement therapy
- Pregnancy
- Previous venous blood clot
- Recent vein procedure
- Clotting disorders
- Cancer
Diagnosing Phlebitis
Thrombophlebitis is typically clinically diagnosed after a comprehensive medical history and physical examination. Ultrasound scans may be useful for confirmation of the diagnosis.
How is phlebitis treated?
Phlebitis is inflammation and not commonly related to infection. Treatment of phlebitis is mainly aimed at relieving symptoms. Limb elevation and cold compresses may be useful. Often, pain killers and anti-inflammatory medications are prescribed. If the inflammation is due a venous infection, antibiotics may be required.
