Dr McConnell is an interventional radiologist. His specialty uses ultrasound and X-ray imaging to treat conditions through a needle instead of open surgery.
He is Head of Interventional Radiology at Northern Beaches Hospital and also works at the Mater Hospital. He trained at Royal North Shore Hospital, completing his radiology specialist training and fellowships in interventional radiology and interventional neuroradiology.

Interventional radiologists are specialist doctors who use imaging, such as ultrasound and X-ray, to treat conditions from inside the blood vessels through a needle, instead of with open surgery. For varicose veins, that means closing the faulty vein from the inside.
You can book before you have one, but please get a referral from your GP before your appointment. It means Dr McConnell can keep your GP updated about your care. With a referral and a Medicare card, you can also claim the $88.40 rebate on your consultation, and your ultrasound is bulk billed.
The first consultation is $330, including your ultrasound. Varicose vein treatment is $3,000 per leg out of pocket in our rooms, or a $1,800 gap per leg in hospital with private health insurance. Spider vein treatment is $600 per leg, per session. See all fees.
Treatment is done through a needle. In our rooms, local anaesthetic numbs the area being treated. In hospital, you can have twilight sedation or a general anaesthetic. We’ll talk through what to expect at your consultation.
You walk out straight after treatment. Most people wear compression stockings for a period afterwards and are back at work within a day or two, depending on how physical their job is.
Yes. We check every patient with ultrasound first, because spider veins are sometimes fed by a faulty larger vein underneath. If so, that vein is usually treated first.
