Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy (UGFS) is a less invasive treatment option for the treatment of varicose veins. It involves injecting a solution (called a sclerosant) into a vein. The solution irritates the lining of the diseased vein causing the vein to turn into scar tissue and fade. The procedure is tolerable and able to be performed in an outpatient setting in our custom-built clinic.
Patients are able to return to normal activities almost immediately post-procedure.
The procedure takes approximately 30-60 minutes.
Treatments are followed by application of compression stockings, which must be worn for approximately 2 weeks post-procedure.
Microsclerotherapy is the technique used to treat spider veins or thread veins of the legs. It involves the meticulous injection of a liquid sclerosant solution into the target diseased veins, destroying them and causing them to disappear over time. Microsclerotherapy treatment is often performed with the aid of magnification or an infrared vein mapping device. All patients require an initial consultation with Dr McConnell to get a complete medical history and venous system evaluation. Dr McConnell will discuss findings, treatment options, costs, as well as suggest a personalized treatment plan to best treat and remove your spider or thread veins. If you choose to have Microsclerotherapy treatment, a treatment appointment will be booked.
Depending on the severity of your spider veins you may require more than one microsclerotherapy treatment. Appointments are usually spaced out over several weeks.
A follow up appointment will be organised approximately 4 weeks after your procedure in order to assess the treatment progress.

During the procedure, some patients may feel slight discomfort. Legs may feel heavy, ache, or burn. Minor bruising of the treatment area is expected by goes away after a few days. While it’s nearly impossible to predict how you’ll feel, most of our patients have described their treatment as a pain-scale of 0-3 out of 10, while others don’t find it painful but rather mildly unpleasant. Some patients may find it more painful, although the sensation itself fades fast and pain is unlikely to linger more than a few seconds.
Pain is merely one of several symptoms of damaged veins. Your vein specialist at Vein Doctors Sydney will examine your veins thoroughly and discuss any relevant medical concerns with you.
