What is ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy?

Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy (UGFS) is a less invasive treatment option for the treatment of varicose veins. It involves injecting a solution (called a sclerosant) into a vein. The solution irritates the lining of the diseased vein causing the vein to turn into scar tissue and fade. The procedure is tolerable and able to be performed in an outpatient setting in our custom-built clinic.

How is UGFS performed?

  1. Under ultrasound guidance, foam is injected via a needle into the diseased vein.
  2. Foam damages the cells lining the wall of the diseased vein causing them to stick together.

Recovery time

Patients are able to return to normal activities almost immediately post-procedure.

How long does the procedure take?

The procedure takes approximately 30-60 minutes.

Post-procedure

Treatments are followed by application of compression stockings, which must be worn for approximately 2 weeks post-procedure.

Microsclerotherapy

Microsclerotherapy is the technique used to treat spider veins or thread veins of the legs. It involves the meticulous injection of a liquid sclerosant solution into the target diseased veins, destroying them and causing them to disappear over time. Microsclerotherapy treatment is often performed with the aid of magnification or an infrared vein mapping device. The treatment is often performed with the aid of magnification or an infrared vein mapping device.

Pre-Procedure

All patients require an initial consultation with Dr McConnell to get a complete medical history and venous system evaluation. Dr McConnell will discuss findings, treatment options, costs, as well as suggest a personalized treatment plan to best treat and remove your spider or thread veins. If you choose to have Microsclerotherapy treatment, a treatment appointment will be booked.

Microsclerotherapy – The Procedure

  • Under direct visualisation, a very fine needle is inserted into the diseased spider veins or thread veins.
  • A solution (sclerosant) is injected into the diseased vein resulting in damage to the inner lining (intima) of the diseased vein. This causes the vein to collapse and over time the treated vein is resorbed by the body.
  • Multiple injections may be required depending on the extent of venous disease.
  • The procedure takes approximately 30-60 minutes.

Depending on the severity of your spider veins you may require more than one microsclerotherapy treatment. Appointments are usually spaced out over several weeks.

Post-procedure

  • A compression stocking should be worn for 4 days.
  • You will be advised to take a light 30-minute walk immediately after your procedure. You can then resume your normal daily activities immediately.
It is recommended to walk regularly to aid the recovery process as well as assist in preventing recurrence.

Recovery time

A follow up appointment will be organised approximately 4 weeks after your procedure in order to assess the treatment progress.

During the procedure, some patients may feel slight discomfort. Legs may feel heavy, ache, or burn. Minor bruising of the treatment area is expected by goes away after a few days. While it’s nearly impossible to predict how you’ll feel, most of our patients have described their treatment as a pain-scale of 0-3 out of 10, while others don’t find it painful but rather mildly unpleasant. Some patients may find it more painful, although the sensation itself fades fast and pain is unlikely to linger more than a few seconds.

Pain is merely one of several symptoms of damaged veins. Your vein specialist at Vein Doctors Sydney will examine your veins thoroughly and discuss any relevant medical concerns with you. A treatment plan and/or management strategy will be proposed once the level of disease has been assessed and all risks and benefits of treatment have been examined.
