Vein Doctors Sydney can assist with several varicose vein treatment options giving you relief from this uncomfortable condition.

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are a type of venous disease. They are abnormal veins (blood vessels), twisted and enlarged, commonly seen on the legs. They occur when the valves in the veins become weak and are unable to efficiently carry blood back to the heart. Varicose veins can cause aching, swelling, and skin discolouration.

Generally benign, varicose veins do not pose a severe health threat. However, certain conditions may result from untreated venous incompetence. These include bleeding, skin ulceration, superficial vein thrombosis or deep vein thrombosis. If left untreated it may cause other issues including leg ulcers.

Cause of Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are caused by weakened or damaged valves in the veins and can be caused by a variety of factors including:

  • Heredity: Varicose veins can be caused by genetics. If someone in your family has them, you may be more likely to get them.
  • Ageing: As you get older, the valves in your veins weaken and become less efficient. This can cause increased pressure in the veins and lead to varicose veins.
  • Pregnancy: During pregnancy, the extra weight of the baby puts extra pressure on your veins, which can cause them to become enlarged.
  • Obesity: Excess weight may increase pressure on the veins, potentially leading to their expansion and visibility.
  • Prolonged standing or sitting: Standing or sitting for long periods of time can put extra pressure on your veins, leading to them becoming enlarged and varicose.

Varicose Vein Removal Treatment Sydney

Vein Doctors Sydney offers the latest, less invasive and effective treatments for varicose veins. These include sclerotherapy, endovenous laser ablation, radiofrequency ablation, medical glue treatment and ambulatory phlebectomy. We also offer conservative management options including compression stockings.

Our highly skilled team will tailor a patient-specific treatment plan for the best possible results, ensuring our patients feel comfortable and confident throughout the process. Varicose vein treatment options include:

  • Sclerotherapy is a less invasive treatment that involves the injection of a sclerosant solution into the affected vein. The solution irritates the inner lining of the vein and causes it to collapse and seal shut.
  • Endovenous laser ablation and radiofrequency ablation involve inserting a catheter and administration of a heat source to the diseased vein.
  • A relatively new treatment for varicose veins is Medical Glue Treatment (VenaSeal). This involves the injection of a special medical-grade glue into the diseased vein, which essentially seals the vein shut.
  • Ambulatory phlebectomy is an outpatient surgical procedure removing the visible, bulging, and diseased varicose vein branches.
  • Compression stockings are a type of hosiery that is worn to improve blood flow, helping to alleviate varicose vein symptoms and reduce the risk of developing varicose veins. Compression stockings are available in a variety of compression levels, depending on the amount of pressure required for your particular condition.

The appropriate treatment plan will be tailored to your specific condition, taking into consideration the size and location of your varicose veins, as well as your overall health.

FAQs

If you require more information on varicose vein treatment, please read our most frequently asked questions:

Medicare does cover some varicose vein treatments for those who qualify. The eligibility requirements for coverage under Medicare are based on the medical necessity of the procedure.
Varicose veins cannot be fixed on your own. Treatment for varicose veins must be done by a medical professional. Treatment to improve vein health may include lifestyle changes, compression stockings, sclerotherapy, endovenous ablation or surgery.

There is no fast easy solution to varicose veins. The best approach is to make lifestyle changes to reduce the symptoms. These include regular exercise, avoiding sitting or standing for long periods of time, wearing compression stockings, and elevating your legs when possible.

If lifestyle changes do not help, you may want to consult with a doctor to discuss medical treatments such as sclerotherapy, endovenous ablation, or surgery.

Varicose veins are caused by weakened or damaged valves in the veins. When the valves are weakened or damaged, they cannot keep the blood flowing in one direction, causing it to back up and pool in the veins, leading to varicose veins.
Varicose veins are most commonly found on the legs, especially around the calf and ankle areas. They can also appear on the face, abdomen, scrotum, and vulva.
Spider veins are small, thin veins that look like webs of blue and red lines that are close to the surface of the skin. Varicose veins are larger, swollen, and twisted veins that may look lumpy or bulging and are usually dark blue or purple in colour.
