ToggleIs Varicose Vein Treatment Painful?
Varicose veins are the cause of pain and discomfort for so many. Despite this, many people who suffer from varicose veins, are under the impression that vein treatment is painful and put off seeking the advice of a vein specialist.
There are several non-painful, minimally invasive treatments available today for the removal of the debilitating symptoms caused by varicose veins; many of which are treated with simple local anaesthetic. There is no reason for anyone to live with painful symptoms of varicose veins, fearing the treatment process, which is almost painless.

The Treatment Process
A lot of questions we hear – such as, “Does vein treatment hurt?”) date back to when vein stripping and other forms of traditional vein surgery were the go-to methods for treating varicose veins. Years ago, treatments required full anaesthesia and an operating room, not to mention weeks of recovery – not a pleasant event to look forward to.
Today, varicose vein treatment is substantially less aggressive and is performed in an out-patient setting or in our consulting rooms. This means, to treat varicose veins you do not require surgery.
With recent advancements in vein treatments, non-surgical methods and minimally invasive treatments have come to the forefront. Getting your veins treated is a considerably quicker and relatively pain-free operation than it used to be, with an average treatment length of 20-60 minutes for one session.
Is Varicose Vein Treatment Painful?
It’s important to note that everyone feels and experiences pain differently. Pain is one way that our body’s protective systems keep us safe. What may feel like a pinprick to one person may be a severe, throbbing pain to another.
While it’s nearly impossible to predict how you’ll feel, most of our patients have described their treatment as a pain-scale of 0-3 out of 10, while others not finding it painful but rather mildly unpleasant.
Depending on the treatment option discussed beforehand with your vein specialist, the procedure is performed through a 5 mm incision in the lower leg. While the procedures are not unpleasant, some people may find the procedures in a clinic unsettling. If you are anxious or apprehensive, consult our specialists at Vein Doctor Sydney and we will ensure you are made to feel as at ease and comfortable throughout the procedure as possible.
Patients are able to return to work or resume normal activities following the treatment and your vein specialist will advise you on the best possible aftercare. You will also have access to your doctor for any follow-up inquiries as part of your treatment plan.
